An Element Ungrounded

For chamber orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet in Bb, basson, horn, trumpet in Bb, trombone, 2 percussion players [tenor drum, bass drum, tubular bells], piano, strings)

While writing this piece I was thinking a lot about inertia - how much energy does it take to pull something out of nothing? And how much energy does that something then require to not fall back into nothingness? This work is full of tiny bursts that act as little “big bangs,” summoning forth the elements of sound, which develop over time into a long, sustained sonority before colliding into a singularity.
