Touch Has a Memory


For solo contrabass

Taking the sheer physicality of bass playing as a starting point, this work exploits the personal relationship between performer and instrument in an attempt to elicit subtle correspondences between sound and touch. The sense of touch is developed in various ways throughout, from the most literal percussive effects to the more abstract proliferation of half steps (notes that “touch” on the staff). In this way I hope to evoke not only a range of physical contact, but also the shades of intimacy with which we associate it.
